€18 million in grants available for intellectual property protection

Day 24. April 2025

European businesses, including startups and SMEs, can once again access grants from the 2024 SME Fund, managed by the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in cooperation with the European Commission. A total of €18 million is available to reimburse costs related to intellectual property (IP) protection.

What can businesses get funding for?

Companies can apply for vouchers to cover costs related to:

  • registering trademarks, designs, and patents,

  • receiving advice in cases of IP rights infringement,

  • protecting plant varieties.

Reimbursement rates range from 50% to 90% of application and service costs. The goal is to strengthen the competitiveness and innovation capacity of European businesses—especially those in early development stages.

Who can apply?

All micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises based in the EU are eligible. Businesses must first apply for a voucher, and only then can they submit a request for cost reimbursement.

Why is this relevant for startups?

For startups developing innovative products and services, effective IP protection is essential for maintaining a competitive edge and attracting investment. But IP-related costs can be a barrier—this fund helps startups manage their IP rights early and strategically.
