Founded in 2010, company Mesi
is a full member of University incubator Ljubljana
and one of the winners of the Rector’s award for the best innovation of the University of Ljubljana. It is developing innovative medical devices. The first project with which the company is asserting itself is the medical device for measuring the ankle-brachial index (ABPI MD) and is meant for early detection of peripheral artery disease (PAD) with the oscillometric method. PAD affects about 15% of people above 65 years of age. Due to smoking, fat food and stressful lifestyle, there are about 900,000 people in Slovenia who could be affected by this disease, according to the doctors.
Following the recommendations of the International union of angiology, the ankle index should be measured on every person above 45 years of age, which means that an ABPI MD should be present in every clinic. There are 89,000 of them only on the European and Russian market. The advantage of the Automatic measurement of ankle index are time saving when doing the measurement (goes from 30 minutes to one minute) and simple use (since it’s only necessary to put cuffs on a hand and both ankles and press the button start), while the diagnosis is also cheaper since a medical technician can do it and not a doctor.
The development of ABPI MD takes into account the medical standard, medical legislation and user demand. The entire development with the first series of manufacturing will take until December 2011. Parallel to this, clinical assessment of the device, standard testing, active promotion and further development will be done. The company wishes to get the grant of the P2 tender of the Slovene Enterprise Fund, but the acquired financial help only represents a minimal part of the necessary investment for the purposes of development, intellectual property protection, funding the first series of manufacturing and marketing. This is why the company has actively been searching for additional equity financing.
